Gothic square and walls

In 1376, under the reign of Louis I., Bardejov finally became a free royal town. The town’s independence and a peaceful life of its traders and craftsmen were secured by fortifications consisting of impregnable gates, sturdy watchtowers and a surrounding moat filled with water. The entry gates were guarded by a drawbridge and since the sixteenth century also by a barbican. The city center has a rectangle profile and is dominated by the Basilica of Saint Egidius, the Town Hall and a row of burghers’ houses which sport typical period gables.

The Basilica of Saint Egidius

The most important monument of our town is the roman catholic The Basilica of Saint Egidius, situated in the northern part of the square. The oldest part of this magnificent three-part building dates back to the 15th century. The interior of the church is adorned by a set of 11 gothic winged altars dated to the same period, some of which are considered the most prestigious carved altarpieces of their kind in Europe. Together with other monuments of the town, The Basilica was listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000.

Renaissance Town Hall

In the middle of the gothic square stands the charming gothic-renaissance building of the former Town Hall from the early 16th century. Today it serves today as a museum dedicated to the region of Šariš, where a permanent historic exposition of "Free Royal Town of Bardejov" can be found. Among the collection items, there is a remarkable collection of gothic sculptures, guild items, an original seal from 1453, Empress Elizabeth 's diamond ring and the Little Calvary, which is the work of Master Paul of Levoča.
